Repairing Phones

Hi,

Some of the USB ports on our phones have worn out over time. I have been reading the manuals and haven't noticed anything saying I can't go in and repair the USB connector myself, but I figured I would ask on the forums before doing so. Anyone know if this would make them illegal for use? I don't see why it would as it is just a repair.

Here's a different question though: Instead of replacing the USB connector, is it legal to hardwire an OTG cable or hub or something else in its place? This would allow for better strain relief.

Rule <RE15> says you can modify (which covers repairs I guess) approved electronics but the examples given make what you're proposing a grey area since it's internal rather than external and that seems to be a key differentiator in those 2 lists. Post the question on offical Q&A once it opens. Also if you did have these USB ports replaced I don't think anyone would notice anyhow. Imagine a hardware inspector failing your robot because the USB cables didn't fall out easily enough!

No as per Game Manual Part 1 5.3.3 "Teams must ensure that electrical and electronic devices are used consistent with manufacturer's requirements and specifications". I think hard wiring USB into your phone, which is a bad idea IMO since now you'll completely destroy it if the cable gets yanked, would not be consistent with the manufacturer's specs.
